I spent a lot of time patching as a child and will occasionally patch as an adult. I have amblyopia due to strabismus. Patching was very difficult. I found focusing, using my weak eye to be very debilitating. Often printed pages or lined paper would rock back and forth or jump up and down. I found tracking across a line of print to be impossible without covering the words below the line I was reading. It made it more difficult to gage where my body was in space. I bumped into walls, tripped over unexpected items left out of place and had to be vigilant in watching where I was going. The patch was also uncomfortable. Parents should probably be aware that their child may find everyday activities to be more difficult. Small rewards may be helpful but the child may also need visual support as the vision strengths. Patching doesn’t always work for long term results and may need to be repeated at times.
